Dinner with Emily

It’s almost Christmas in Japan and my daughter Emily and I enjoyed a nice evening out together just before the holidays. Emily’s mother was out with her friends for the evening so Emily and I decided to go and get a real American hamburger. We had a great time and these are some of the photos from our evening out. I will also include a short video at the end which presents the evening as well.

Photo of a Video on the Bench

I’m not quite sure how this happened… I found this image in my iPhone photo roll after my day-long outing with friends to visit Oldenyouth. The image appears to be a picture of MULLY, Ted and I on the FamilyMart bench and 1:52 into making a video. A curious image indeed as it is one I have no recollection making. I’m really happy however that I found it. 🙂

How I met T.

T. (@JY69 on Twitter) is my neighbor… However, in a town of 750,000 people it can sometimes be difficult to actually find and meet your neighbor. This curious fact provided a rather awkward backdrop for the quite pleasant and close relationship I had developed with my friend over the last few years. Standout memories of close encounters included a video I uploaded from a supermarket in Shimizu ward where T. regularly shops as well as dinner with my family (again caught on video) at the same gyoza joint where T. had previously made a video for YouTube. We would sometimes tweet about our seemingly near-encounters though in fact the chance to meet in person remained an elusive goal. This changed over the previous weekend when T. drove out my way to enjoy coffee and laughter with edtomorrow (Ted) as well as the fabulous YouTube duo of WarmothStrat (aka MULLY, Jim, “the big guy”, “the Black and Orange Shadow” or simply @mully1234 and his amazing wife Tomoko/TMK_85). I didn’t know T. would be at the restaurant (though I kinda wondered and certainly hoped she might) as I parked my bicycle and peeked inside (peek inside with me via the video below). To my everlasting delight T. is now a member of my Leo Buscaglia hug-collection club along with Ted, Oldenyouth, both MULLYs, Jenn (nihonjenn), Amanda (panditty) as well as a host of other in-Japan YouTube friends and many who have visited me from abroad and while traveling in Japan. I am indeed a lucky guy! The photo below is one of my favs from the past weekend of friendship and I look forward to collecting more such images in future with T. and other friends from the great green anthill of YouTube Japan (I have no idea what that anthill reference means yet I’m sticking with it). 🙂

How I met edtomorrow

Ted (edtomorrow) and I go way back… I first remember Ted from YouTube though over time he became a good friend as well on Facebook and Twitter. Ted is rather unique in being one of the few full-fledged JVLOGGERS who does not actually live in Japan. His participation is integral to the quality and character of the Japan YouTube community which fact is evident in his greatly appreciated attendance of several planned Content Creator gatherings. This fact has set the standard for major get-togethers which will never be quite legitimate or complete unless Ted makes an appearance.

Until this month I have sadly missed my chance (due to my own absence) to shake Ted’s hand at the big Tokyo get-together during summer 2011 as well as at the Kobe event in November of the same year. Ted’s antics with individual Content Creators around Japan were regular features in my Twitter stream during 2011 which made me especially eager for the chance to meet him at last in person. My chance finally arrived after Ted came to Shizuoka (where  I live) to spend several days on invite from the MULLYs (Jim and Tomoko aka mully3822 and TMK_85). On the last day of his visit we met at the FamilyMart bench around noon to make our way to the domain of the Oldenyouth. A great day was had by all and by the time we posed for the photo below it seemed our little group had been fast friends for years. I really look forward to our next and all future meetings on-line and in person with my new and very special friend.

During our day together I was honored to have a chance to participate in the following special video comedy skit with Ted (this vid is representative of a sequence of similar videos being made by Ted during his current visit in Japan. The vids are all featured on his channel which is linked below):

How I met the Oldenyouth

I remember that I had already been on the Internet for several years on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and other sites when I first encountered the Oldenyouth. His dark, hooded-cloak, talking hands, precious stones and mummies along with his distinctive voice and narrative speech were an immediate draw. We became on-line friends fairly quickly and I am happy to have finally had a chance to meet him in person this last Sunday.

MULLY and I had discussed the idea of visiting Oldie for several months and decided the time was right when our friend edtomorrow (Ted) came to Shizuoka to visit for several days. So, on a warm Sunday in November, Ted, Tomoko (TMK_85), Jim (MULLY1284) and I piled into the MULLY-mobile for a fun-filled two hour drive into the realm of mystery and intrigue. Our efforts were well rewarded with friendship, laughter, hugs and joy in the court of Oldie and his kind and generous father. We left with special gifts as well as the secrets of true names, age, appearance and other wonders which will forever be kept safe near our hearts out of respect and appreciation for our dear Oldenfriend.
